This is not so much a review about the story, but the presentation of this box set. I have always wanted to track down the volumes of the Utena manga, but I knew it would be an expensive endeavor so I never did. Here, you get 2 full volumes in hardcover (not paperback like in the description) of the entire manga series. The books are beautiful and sturdy and display nicely in the box. I enjoyed Utena when I was younger and as an adult, I don't have the space for multiple books of manga anymore. This is PERFECT, looks nice displayed and doesn't take up a ton of space. . I hope publishers will take note and resurrect other series like this.

The manga version of Revolutionary Girl Utena tells a really powerful, mystical, and the utmost otherworldly story. It gives me a sense of optimism and at times, thorniness, as if something has not resolved––even though the Chiho Saito’s manga gives the ending more thoroughness than the anime. Again, that is simply my opinion.

*Spoilers*

In terms of characterization, the manga version of Touga Kiryuu is the utmost compelling and interesting. Unlike the anime, Touga is truly in love with Utena and is the only one besides Himemiya to remember her after Utena sacrifices her entire existence.

I actually relate to him a great deal, about his worldview and why he wants this power to revolutionize the world.

“Tenjou, have you ever felt…that you were an outsider? That this place we look down upon…It’s like another world, far from the real one? Our true world exists someplace else. We all want to get that world back…So we can finally return to our deepest selves. This world we inhabit…It’s like an egg…A small world encased in a hard shell. The chick will die, unborn, it it doesn’t break through that shell. It will die, without ever knowing that it’s a bird! If we don’t break the world’s shell…we’ll die without being born…without knowing we can fly! And I want to fly. That is why I will revolutionize the world…so that I can be myself…!”

To feel so suffocated in this world, being external to this world that seems so real, I guess I can really understand him. I, too, if possible, desire this power. In fact, it’s the only thing worth starting the shattering of this world, to put an end to all the contradictions and human depravity. Despite how ridiculous this sounds, it is the power to play god even obeying World’s End to do that.
As a long- time Utena fan who had bought the manga volumes via Viz in the early 00's but had never managed to complete the set, I mostly bought these just to finish the story. What I got was much more. The quality of these books and the paper used are fantastic. The color pictures are lovely, the included poster was equally great, and I swear the books are rose scented. I may be imagining that last part but if I'm not it is genius marketing. If you were ever a fan of Utena, this is a "must-own" set. I'm using them to pass the series on to the next generation.
Both the box and the two books are aesthetically pleasing, not to mention the beautiful mini poster included. The manga itself is very good, with breathtaking artwork and a compelling story. For those of you who watched the anime first, you don't have to worry about going through the same story all over again. There are plenty of notable differences. In addition to the main story, this set also includes the one-shots and the movie tie-in. If your a big manga collector, a huge Utena fan, or both, then I highly recommend this.
it came in perfect condition. the included poster is a bit NSFW, and won't be on my wall due to that, but the publication quality is superb. within the two books comes the entirety of the RGU series, the short side stories, as well as the entirely of 'adolescence of utena' manga! each volume is packed with beautiful high-quality illustrations from the artist.

if you're a collector, a fan or just interested in the utena universe, this is absolutely a must-buy.
This is a beautiful item for any Revolutionary Girl Utena fan. The binding is wonderful, and the covers are gorgeous. This collector's item is a perfect tribute to the manga. I honestly love it and it was totally worth the money. Usually I would be annoyed at myself for spending around forty dollars on manga, which I know because I've done it before, but this box set is worth it.
I love how tall the books are, they make is so much easier to see the finer details! Overall I'm very impressed, the afterword by the author and art director gave some insight into the story I'd never known before. They look nice in the sleeve, but even better on display
I honestly can't say enough good things about how beautifully this was packaged. There's gloss color pages at the beginning of each book of chihos beautiful illustrations. Each book is hardcover. The case is beautiful and it comes with a poster. The page and quality of the printing is very good and very consistent.This was my favorite series as a kid. Now 13 years later and it's still my favorite anime and manga series. I don't think there's an Utena or Chiho Saito fan out there that wouldn't absolutely love this. This is a great product at a fabulous price.
