Nora Roberts has written about a million books*, and I’ve read the majority of them – she’s who I cut my teeth on in the Romance Genre back in the day, starting with my (still) favorite: Carolina Moon. And she’s consistently dependable to deliver a Nora Roberts book. This is both good, and bad. When Nora Roberts is good, she’s very, very good. And I think that once upon a time she had a quarter of a million** different ideas and ways to present them. The problem is that we’re way past that now and the ideas and ways to present them continuously seem to be recycled.
Let me count the ways in just this book/series: there are witches (see also the Three Sisters Island trilogy, and the Key and Circle Trilogies, actually), and Ireland (see also the Born In Trilogy, and Gallaghers of Ardmore Trilogy). There’s an otherwordly BIG EVIL (see Key Trilogy and Sign of Seven). Then there’s the American come to **somewhere out of their comfort zone** to live (Born In, Gallaghers of Ardmore, Key, Three Sisters, and many more). There’s the apologetic female character (all of them), the untrusting female character (all of them), and the brash, tomboyish female character (all of them). There’s the intuitive male, the brawler, and the one that is so certain of the love that they fight for it always (all of them).
This is what I mean when I say that Nora Roberts can be counted on to deliver a “Nora Roberts” book. She does it, and it’s pleasing…as long as I haven’t over-indulged lately. I take LONG breaks between reading any Roberts books anymore. I can’t handle the sameness – unless it’s my old favorites (which will always hold a special place in my heart), like Carolina Moon, Chesapeake Bay Series, and a few others.
I enjoyed this book. I did. But it’s just more of the same from the author. I feel like everything’s recycled. Nothing is new. I’ve been here and done that. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just … meh.
*Seriously, it feels like it.
**Well, will a million books written, the ideas have to stop being original sometime, I suppose.

Dark Witch Cousins O'Dwyer Nora Roberts 9780425259856 Books Reviews
I enjoyed this trilogy but it bothered me that SO MANY of the plot details were so similar to her previous books--especially the Three Sisters trilogy. Do I recommend the series? Yes, but it isn't my favourite. I have read this in print version and have the audio books. The narration is fine but the same person doesn't narrate each book. Warning below are mild spoilers for the general story line all 3 books.
Woman who doesn't know she is a witch joins 2 other witches to fight big evil (first book). Woman falls in love with non-witch good guy who totally accepts her being a witch. The most powerful female witch (3rd book) has unresolved former relationship with other male witch who isn't a true part of the 3-wtich circle but is determined to win back the woman and help fight the big evil. As always, there are gardens in this series but less than some other books. Has horses, which was a prominent element in many of Nora's earlier books. The one thing I did REALLY like about this series and found to be unique is the connection to the original witches from hundreds of years ago in the family line and how their story is really explored. The story actually starts with them and goes on for a chapter or two in each book--really established this part of the tale. Then the characters from this past part show up more and more as the trilogy continues and I like that too. This element is involved in a minor way in the Three Sisters trilogy (metaphysical contact with the ancestral witches that started the family line) but this series really tells the tale and those witches are actually important characters in this series.
I have read Nora Roberts for years and she never ceases to carry me away with her novels. My favorites are the series like this one, the one that spins a tale of magic right along with the characters that are so easy to love. Dark Witch is the first in a new series, The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy.
There is so much to love about this book... love, magic, intrigue, friendship, and the eternal battle between good and evil. And all of this is woven with the lovely lilting language of Ireland and all of the magical mythology of that land. The romance between Iona and Boyle is wonderful, but the true focus of the story is the magic and the battle. I love a story that includes the romance we all love, but doesn't make it the entire focus of the story.
Iona is a fabulous female lead, American-born, but of Irish descent. Her life hasn't really been bad, but she has felt disconnected and at odds with her life. So she decides to turn her own life on end and move to Ireland, to the place of her grandmother's childhood, in an effort to find her roots and find the place where she truly belongs. Part of her journey was to seek out her cousins, Branna and Connor. Once the three are united, it is then the magic truly begins.
I really love that the magic of the story isn't limited to just the three cousins. It includes three of their friends as well, all of whom instantly accept Iona as one of their own. The circle that the six make include siblings, friends, lovers, cousins. Branna and Connor are siblings, cousins to Iona. Meara is Branna's best friend, not magical, but clearly a warrior in her own right. Boyle is friend to Connor, strong and steady and the perfect foil for Iona. And there is Fin, who has magic, and an interesting story, of his own. He is Connor and Boyle's friend and he clearly has a past with Branna. Each of the six brings something different to the table and the mixed cast of characters is so interesting.
Things to love...
--The blend of the past and the present. Most of the story is told in the present, but the beginnings of the battle between good and evil are rooted in the distant past of the late 1200's.
--The blend of magic and romance. The romance adds spice to the story without overpowering a really fantastic plot.
--The lovely lilt of the Irish spoken word. Love, love, love it and it comes through so clearly in Roberts' words.
My Recommendation I can't say enough for this book. I love it! It's been out awhile, but I purposely held on to it until all three books were out. I knew that once I started, I would NEED the next book!
