I downloaded Earls Just Want To Have Fun because of the narrator Elizabeth A. Crick, she is one of the best narrators I have ever listen too on audible book. I was looking for other stories she narrated and came across Earls Just Want To Have Fun.

Lady Elizabeth Grafton was abducted at age 5 while playing in Hyde Park. She was tricked into playing kick ball and taken to live with a Flash Gang of thieves. 15 years later Sir Brook Derring who is know as the hero of Bow Street has been hired to find her and he does. He re kidnaps Elizabeth, AKA now know as Marlowe and throws her in a carriage with his brother Maxwell Derring the Earl of Dane. Maxwell is asked to take Marlowe to there home and keep her there until his brother Brook can notify the Marquess of Lyndon and Lady Lyndon that he has found there long lost missing daughter. This begins a Madcap adventure of Marlowe upsetting the refined dignified household of the Earl of Dane. It's the beginning of a snob falling in love with his lesser or a person he believes is far below his own station in life.

I loved Elizabeth/Marlowe and I just wished the author had spent more time on letting the reader see the relationship develop between Marlowe and her Long lost Parents. This doesn't happen until the very end of the story. The ending is rushed and the next thing you read after she meets her parents is she is married to the Earl. There is no real thought given to what could have been a great ending. Thus 4 stars instead of 5.

Earls Just Want to Have Fun Covent Garden Cubs Shana Galen 0760789246463 Books Reviews

I really liked this book. I thought the writing was great, the plot fresh and the characters likable and entertaining.

Dane was probably one of the most amusing heroes I have read in quite awhile. His reactions to Marlowe were very funny. He has been so proper for so long and she is just what he needs to remember how to live. He has a heart of gold buried under all that stuffiness and with Marlowe he finds it. He was not perfect. In fact his reaction to her question about if he would marry her if she was Lady Elizabeth really disappointed me. He prides himself on being a gentleman so his reaction seemed out of character.

Marlowe was very entertaining too. She has been raised in a flash house in St Giles. She is a thief and has no manners at all. She is a very protective of the other cubs and really doesn't want to be a thief. Seeing her transformation into a lady was very amusing and touching.

I liked Dane's sister Susanna and am looking forward to her book. I don't know how I feel about Gideon being the hero - considering his feelings for Marlowe - I am not a big fan of heroes who love someone else. But Ms Galen has had heroes like this before, so I have faith that she can make it work.
Every once in a while you run across something – you do it, you see it, you eat it, or in this case, you read it. And you think…WOW! Why haven’t I tried that before? Or, where has that been hiding? That is exactly the feeling I have had since I picked up the first of (and now I have acquired several) of Shana Galan’s books! This is not the first one I read, but it is the most recent, and I am starting my reviews for her with this one. So, let me go back to ‘WOW.’

This book picked me up and kept me glued to the pages from the first three words. “She was five.” She would be Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a young well-bred lady, who hated her nanny because she thought her nanny was mean. She loved her mother because her mommy laughed a lot, loved her, sang sang sweet songs to her and did fun stuff with her that mommies that love their little girls do with them. She loved that her mommy would tuck her in at night. Elizabeth was a happy child. But one afternoon Elizabeth was with her nanny in the park and got distracted and was suddenly lost. An ugly man with missing teeth grabs Elizabeth and we close that chapter, our hearts crying with Elizabeth, as she realizes she is in trouble.

We meet Marlowe whose day is spent picking pockets, spotting easy marks, and working the streets of London. She is tough. As one of the Covent Garden Cubs, her day begins and ends from a corner of a shanty where her bed is hard, and blends in with the rest of her dirty surroundings. She answers to Satin, a mean gang leader who leads by threats and brutality. Marlowe remembers the punishment she received when she didn’t do what she was told by Satin. She prefers not to repeat that. She has seen friends disappear. Her world is small, and the cubs are her family. They depend on each other for survival. Every once in a while she has dreams about a little girl in a park, with a mother that sings to her. But that seems like a dream. She pushes it away. This is her life. Her life seems to be going well until she picks the wrong pocket…and the bubble calls her Elizabeth, the girl that is in her dreams. Marlowe refuses to believe this and runs.

But let me tell you a little about The Earl of Dane. This man is a snob. He doesn’t want to marry. He likes his life just the way it is. He will marry when he is ready to have an heir. Until then, life is going swimmingly. Maybe he is jaded because his father suffered and died shortly after their home was broken into and robbed by a thug. Dane believes the poor can help themselves. They don’t need the rich to do it for them. He resents the policies thrown up in Parliament for their behalf and doesn’t support them. Life is about to get very interesting for Lord Dane!

Shana Galen’s story is rich with her character development, her plot, and subplots. I stayed engaged from page one through the end. She does a lovely job of unfolding things a little at a time, yet keeping the pace humming along. Just when you think you have figured things out…she unfurls a twist you weren’t expecting. This book is wonderful. When I finished it, I was reminded of something my daughter told me when she was seven. She had just tried her macaroni and cheese….with pepper. She loved it! Megan looked up and said to me, “All my life, I didn’t know about pepper!” Well, all my life I didn’t know about Shana Galan! I do now. Five stars for this one!

"Earls Just Want To Have Fun" is one of the best historical romances I have EVER read, and I've read tons. I was not familiar with the works of Shana Galen before this, but I am so happy to have discovered her. I first read "Viscount of Vice," because it was a novella and had good reviews. My current schedule doesn't leave much time for reading, but I had a little extra time for a quick read. Well, I read that book quickly enough, and was so enamored of Ms. Galen's writing, that I decided to buy the next book in the Convent Garden Cubs Series. This book was supposed to be something I would get to on a long weekend or when things slowed down, but I made the mistake of reading the beginning and couldn't stop for anything. I won't go into the plot....you can read the other reviews for that, but please believe me when I say that this author is incredibly talented and you will adore this book. I laughed out loud a number of times and I even cried. I was so shocked, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but this book actually made me cry. I can count on one hand, the number of times I was this heavily invested in the characters of a book. All I can say is WOW! You must read this book!
