We meet Jade as she’s working as a living statue. It’s late in the evening and then she sees this man staring at her and on impulse she and he have a one night stand. Then she sees him at her day job. Shane is a talented violinist and plays in the orchestra. Though these two people are very unlike one another, their lives are woven together like a tapestry.I have had this book in my T(oo) B(e) R(ead) Pile for eons. And I FLOVE Ms. Cosway’s writing, so much so, that I one click her work without even reading the blurb. That being said, I just never got around to reading this story. In reading it, I’m reminded again why I love her writing so much. Shane is a deeply broken man. He seems so polished and put together, but he’s missed so many fundamentals of what really makes life worth living. I love him ALMOST as much as Nic/Viv. And that’s saying something. Jade is tough as nails, but not nearly so tough as she seems. She needs gentleness, but that very well could be the thing that breaks her. And these two come together and they FIT. They fit in such a way that it seems impossible that they’re not real. They are far from perfect. Far from being flawed. But they truly were magic in text. I’m telling you, Ms. Cosway is an amazing author. Her side characters are really interesting also, there’s Alec, Jade’s brother, and Lara, and Ben and Clark. Not to mention the interesting people you run across at Ladybird’s. Like I said, this book reminds me why I love her stuff so much and it makes me want to go back and read all her stuff all over again.
Ms. Cosway has this ability to create these characters that bleed real in front of you. Though they’re text on a screen, they come to life and welcome you into their lives. And these people might have shame, but their willing to bear their souls for you to witness them at their most vulnerable and broken. Her ability to make the broken parts of these characters beautiful. Those parts are why we fall in love with them. And though this book of hers didn’t move me heart-wrenching tears like King of Hearts, nor move me to fall in love with a gender-bending alpha male like Painted Faces, this is really and truly an amazing book. So yes, Virginia, I would recommend this book. Just make sure you understand that the naughty bits are quite naughty and decide accordingly.

Sometimes you get lost in a book. You find yourself crawling into it, tracing your fingers down the banister as you walk down to breakfast, paying special attention to the spoon as it curves out of your mouth. Listening closely as your heels hit the pavement. Breathing in the scent of the season all the way down to your toes. You find yourself walking in the characters’ shadows, eavesdropping on their conversations, wishing that you could stay in this gorgeous world with them.
I got lost in this book.
I got lost in Jade’s vibrant life. How even every day at the symphony house was different. How she could take the smallest of things, a snowfall, and turn it into diamonds falling softly on the earth. How she could be so overflowingly full of love, even when she doesn’t want to be.
And I got lost in Shane as well. In his heartbreakingly beautiful journeys with his violin. How hard he works to get Jade to let him love her. How tender he is, but how completely he lays claim to what he loves. How he has transformed his pain into beauty and how proudly he wears that now.
Watching Shane and Jade come together is an extraordinarily beautiful story. The story is told from Jade’s perspective, but we get such a clear picture of Shane as well that it’s hard not to fall head over heels for both of them. And all the rest of the characters too, for that matter.
LH Cosway has written a masterpiece with this book. It’s a painting trapped on pages that only look like words, but are really varying colors and pigments mixed together on the fly to compose the most gorgeous love story I’ve read in a very long time. This book crackles with every grin, throws a wink with every cheeky piece of banter and traces goose bumps down your arm with every beautifully intimate scene. This book is passion and beguiling sorrow tantalizing you with every turn of the page. This book is everything you’ve ever wanted in a love story.
I am so completely, unabashedly, head over heels in love with this author. She possesses an extraordinary ability to tell a story that you want to climb inside of and stay forever. Every single thing about it is so utterly beautiful, even the pain, that you will never want to leave. I will remain, thoroughly lost in Cosway’s work, for as long as she’ll have me.
