The rating? I was completely convinced of the story as told with just a hint of skepticism, but would not have been able to express the outcome. The legacy that began with the first tales of Holmes and Watson seem endless and I wonder at the amazing skill writers such as Laurie King and her bee keeping tales of Holmes as his brilliant wife Mary Russell come to be written let alone imagined. Read it when you are not interrupted, it is hard to put down.
The trick-based plot and cruel ending of this story shows, in my opinion, a cavalier disrespect for the spirit of A. C. Doyle's original creation. Author Anthony Horowitz also shows a smirking contempt for his readers who invested their time hoping for some kind of literary fulfillment (instead of a nasty pie in the face)..
This novel really got into the groove. It made the effort to tell something new and outside the box to engage an experienced audience.
I would even say that this novel works best only if you are deeply familiar with the main Sherlock Holmes volumes. This knowledge adds extra appreciation. The author handles the time, setting and mood in an authentic way. It made it a pleasure to read.
I want to spoil nothing at all, but the real fun is that it becomes clear that something must happen in this story, just because we generally know the Holmes-lore. Yet, that knowledge does not tell you what trick is pulled. It was nice
This novel of the Sherlock Holmes world is not nearly as satisfying as The House if Silk, also by Horowitz. The House of Silk uncovers horrors and defeats them. Moriarty uncovers horrors, and the good man does not defeat them. The House of Silk contains moments in which Watson finds himself pondering things left out of the original series (e.g. what happens to the criminals Holmes brings to justice, and what is life like for the children of the East End). Moriarty, however, is quite different. Would The Murder of Roger Ackroyd have been so respected and satisfying if the murderer had not been discovered and defeated?
I was surprised at how many readers did not like this installation into the Holmes cannon. I count myself as a Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes fan through and through and enjoyed this book very much. Yes, it is not a standard Holmes story - but you obviously know that when you enter into this contract with this author. It requires a bit of suspended disbelief as it were as when you go into a magic show -- you know you are going to be deceived, but that is part of the fun. Minus one star for some issues I had with the ending (abrupt, a little too much like the new Holmes movies in its "showiness/timestop silliness"), but overall a solid book with escapism vacation material written all over it.
I am a big fan of historical mysteries and, after reading House of Silk, I was looking forward to Moriarty with great anticipation. I'll admit that I was a bit put off by some of the thoughtful but less than enthusiastic reviews but thought I'd give it a shot anyway. The ending was ridiculous and a violation of the reader's goodwill built up throughout the first 3/4's of the novel. Horowitz will have to do significantly better the next time if he wants me back as a reader.
After reading House of Silk I was eager to get this novel. I didn't realize that neither Holmes nor Watson was in it, so I was pretty disappointed.

There were parts of Moriarty that I liked. Horowitz's enumeration of the problems with the events in The Final Problem in the beginning of the book was brilliant, and I had high hopes for the rest. But the tone changed almost immediately, and the rest of the book was, as another reviewer put it, long-winded. I found myself skimming some of it. I twice had issues with events not making sense. The villain the protagonist is after is just purely ridiculous. The ending didn't reveal anything I hadn't expected.

I don't want to go into more details in case I spoil the mystery. I'll just say that Horowitz offers an alternative series of events here which should have been more compelling than they were. I read to the end of the book because I'd started it, not because I cared what happened to any of these characters or was engrossed in the plot.
